Greengrass seed is a member of the family Poaceae, which consists of wide array of wheat-like grasses. It is commonly found in the temperate areas of the US and Europe. Moreover, the seeds can be grown indoors and outdoors. People commonly use the seeds for growing wheatgrass at home. Once grown, the grass is used to make juice, in various recipes and smoothies.

How is it promoted for utilization?

The greengrass seeds are promoted to treat myriad conditions including coughs, fevers, inflammation, bronchitis, common cold, inflammation of throat and infections. In folk medicine, practitioners utilized the seeds to treat rheumatic pain, constipation, cystitis, chronic skin disorders and gout.

A great number of people utilize wheatgrass juice as a serving of vegetables or as a dietary supplement, some supporters claim that “wheatgrass dietary program” can make cancer to regress and can extend the lives of people suffering from cancer. They strongly believe that Wheatgrass diet strengthens the immune system, eliminates toxins and waste from the body and kills harmful bacteria in the digestive system.

What does it involve?

Many health food nuts believe that fresh wheatgrass offers the most health benefits, and choose to grow their own from wheatgrass from the commercially sold wheatgrass seeds, instead of  purchasing  it from a health food store.

Growing wheat grass is a simple process. The seeds must be soaked in water for around 12-hours before planting in a starter solid mixture. The seeds typically sprout up within 10-days, although it is recommended to that one must harvest the plant when it becomes at least 7 inches tall. People who sow wheatgrass seeds must take good care of it against mold that can crop up when seeds are still in the germination phase.

Furthermore, hydroponic s sprouting mechanisms are used widely in growing the seeds, as this process allows growers to avert using soil, which can turn quiet messy when harvesting the grass. Small, shallow trays are often employed when growing the seed at home to yield a densely-packed supply of grass in a small area.

Evidence??

Wheatgrass

Greengrass seed is a natural source of minerals and vitamins. Nevertheless, available scientific studies do not support the claims that wheatgrass diet can prevent or cure

diseases. One small study reported that when the seeds are grown into wheatgrass and consumed in form of juice along with medical care, it seemed to highly control the symptoms of ulcerative colitis – chronic inflammation of large intestines.

Moreover, there are individual reports that describe extended survival among people with cancer and tumor shrinkage who followed the wheatgrass diet.

Are there any possible complications?

The wheatgrass seeds are sold as a dietary supplement in the US. Opposed to drugs, the companies that produce supplements are not entailed to prove to the Food and Drug Administration that their supplements are effective and safe, unless they claim that the supplements can treat, cure or prevent specific disease.

The seeds are generally considered safe, although there some people have reported hives and nausea.  Since the seeds are sowed in soils, soaked in water and consumed raw, contamination with molds, bacteria and other substance may be a concern.
